Mattress On The Go
Mattress on the go is our collection of foldable and sustainable mattress. The mattresses are a combination of coir and latex as filling and the outer cover is cotton. Sustainability paired with convenience – is our design philosophy for the collection. Outer cover is designed with cotton materials that are developed using indigenous Indian craft techniques like Pochampally Ikat and Jaipur Block Printing. All together is an aesthetic eco-smart foldable mattress collection.
The idea – Coir filled mattress
Working with natural fiber and yarns a creative experience every day. We can experience new patterns, designs and textures quite often. And we always look for more. One fine day in October 2019 in between a casual talk with Mr Arnaud Fert, La Scourtinerie we discussed of a portable mattress with coir. We had some rough drawings and discussions, it stayed in my mind.
Suddenly the world as a whole changed because of the Covid outbreak. After the initial shock of few days, I started thinking about doing something. While our factory and all activities where paused, the tools I had was minimal. I started from cleaning my home, some corners of it I seldom goes transformed to reading corners. My small piece of garden felt like a luxury and made friends with the humming birds and squirrels. We can do more with our interior and garden was an idea that made me waking up early in the morning.
I missed cushions in the reading corners, padded sheets in the terrace and garden. During this time the idea of the folding mattress popped up; it will be a boon to have a portable mattress at home.
Whenever you feel like having some time together in the garden or on the Veranda or on the terrace, this simple object can pamper you. Then I realised portable and travel friendly mattress had multiple uses. I made small prototypes with scarp fabric and waited for the factory to open to make the final product.
An easy to carry, easy to store mattress
It was not as easy to make with coir foams with the machines we had at that point of time. It took three days and four people trial and error effort to make a folding mattress, which was not a fine product. Then comes the design expert, stitching expert views and more trials finally we reached there. When we look at the mattress collection now, I wonder why we had to struggle a lot to make the first one.
Fine and Handcrafted
When the “Mattress On The Go” became reality, then it was about aesthetics and fine quality materials for outer cover, sustainability is not white and brown any more. We need colours in our lives; we collected materials from handloom weavers in Pochampally, in Andhra Pradesh. The outcome was exemplary. We used the thick version of Ikat weave that used for bed sheets for the folding mattress. It was dreamily …….soft touch on skin only handloom fabric can provide.
We curated hand block printed cotton materials from artisans. The appeal of hand block printed folding mattress was charming. It became easy to connect with sustainable products because of the incredible craft factor.
Mattress on the go an incredible pair of Sustainability and Craft created for togetherness
It was a project of many pairings in Craftpair. It all started with the pairing of the idea between individuals of two continents, India & Europe. After that sustainability, handloom and crafts that got blend just like they were meant for it already. The inner cotton of the “mattress on the go” came from Tamil Nadu and coir from Kerala. A fine crafted folding mattress which represents many states of India. And a beautiful sustainable product that compliments outdoor and beach trips of many people in Europe.
Mattress on the go as the name infers mattress can travel with you anywhere. So we planned to make it foldable with belts and bags to carry to the mountains and beaches and anywhere in between. Coir and latex based inner filling is made ready as per dimensions and the inner pieces are first stitched with pure cotton lining. These are inserted to the designer outer cover and stitched with belts wherever necessary. Each portion is double stitched to keep it intact and also it adds to the strength of the mattress.
The belt is multipurpose, if carefully adjusted the belt can hold a pillow when you carry the mattress on your back. We also keep a collection of bed covers that is a perfect fit for on beaches and mountains. These covers are machine washable, this keeps your mattress always neat and tidy.
All the materials used in mattress on the go are plant based and bio degradable. Once the life of mattress is over the material or the mattress never ends up in landfills or oceans suffocating the earth. The inner coir layer is a good growing medium. Coir fiber is rich in potassium, so contacts with soil releases nutrients to earth and enriches soil.
Many Styles In Mattress On The Go
We all are different and our requirements differ too. In such a world offering one product that fits all never make sense. In Craftpair we always think in different angles, along with sustainability we have many design paths to travel to reach that final product. Varied design aesthetics, size requirements and multiple thicknesses are experimented to reach to the final product for optimal use.

Thick Lounge Bed
This is made completely with coir latex foam and jacquard cotton. It is a firm mattress and the thickness is 6 centimeters. Also it is foldable!
It is a mattress that can be used as a firm bed for your yoga or meditation in garden. A perfect movie night accessory, it will help you relax also add to the ambience.
Looks are also important it add warmth to the space and people, the activity becomes more enjoyable. The outer cover of this is made with jacquard cotton and an inner cotton lining also provided.
This is an extra bed in your cupboard that can be used when you have guests around. It is indeed a multi-purpose lounge bed that is affordable, durable and earth friendly.
Thin Lounge Bed
It is an easy to carry mattress and a perfect travel companion for those joyful trips to mountains and beaches. It is light weight; we have provided belts that can be used to carry the mattress easily on your back. This is thin but it’s comfortable and durable and another advantage is it will never loose its shape.
It is always said when you have perfect travel gear it is enjoyed most and the outcome is amazing. You will be more energetic, relaxed and productive. You can add this mattress to the list of a convenient travel companion. If you are accompanied with kids or pets remember to carry one. Celebrate life with each journey long or short it makes sense.
Mattress in Bag
You heard it right, we managed to squeeze a mattress in a bag, that too in a shoulder tote bag. Now just carry it till the beach without much physical efforts. Spread it on the sand and enjoy the sun. It is padded and thin and also cozier and comfortable. It is not very small the design pattern that we created makes it easy to fold and put in a bag.
Set the stage clean clear and beautiful in any picnic spot with these mattresses. No more pricking of grass or small pebbles just ventilated massage when you sit and enjoy the view.
